Abstract

CORONADO RAMIREZ, Semei; SANDOVAL BRAVO, Salvador  and  TORRES MATA, Ana. Diferencias de género, factores que inciden en el rendimiento matemático de licenciaturas económico administrativas. Sinéctica [online]. 2012, n.39, pp.01-22. ISSN 2007-7033.

This study analyzes through descriptive and inferential statistics whether the math section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test has an impact on the mathematic performance of incoming university students. Gender differences were studied as were other demographic variables such as marital status, employment and type of previous educational institution student came from. The population consisted of 2200 student who began classes on February 2011. Five categories were used to evaluate students. The categories were correlated versus a diagnostic test which included part of the math section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). No variables that could determine a correlation regarding math performance on the exam were found. Therefore there must be other socioeconomic and socio-historical variables that can help explain differing math performance in students.

Keywords : gender; university admission test; mathematics; statistical methods; student performance.
