Abstract

SCHMELKES, Sylvia. Educación para un México intercultural. Sinéctica [online]. 2013, n.40, pp.01-12. ISSN 2007-7033.

This article addresses the need that Mexico faces -as a multicultural country and the poverty plight indigenous people face- for a bilingual intercultural education that is culturally and linguistically pertinent at all levels for indigenous people. Although education is only one of many means for fighting inequality, it represents a very important contribution to the construction of an intercultural country. The article defines intercultural education and what this means for indigenous people and the population as a whole. We conclude by forecasting two scenarios: one in which the indigenous population continues to be left behind, and a second in which an intercultural society starts to be constructed. For the latter several educational challenges are described, and emphasis is placed on the need of an active participation of indigenous people in the process.

Keywords : indigenous education; intercutlural bilingual education; intercultural education.
