Abstract

MOGUEL-PARRA, Guadalupe; AMOR-SANTOYO, Salvador  and  BARRAGAN-PEREZ, Eduardo. Patient safety, priority of the Hospital Infantil de Mexico: Point of view from the physician as a patient. Bol. Med. Hosp. Infant. Mex. [online]. 2008, vol.65, n.5, pp.407-411. ISSN 1665-1146.

Objective: To sensitize the health staff about patient safety, reminding them that all at some point in our lives have been or will be patients, and that the safety program in the patient within the hospital and our country is everyone's responsibility. We report the case of a doctor who suffers respiratory arrest by an error in the administration of a drug in the payback period of anesthesia for elective surgery. Aware of her cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the physician experienced for a few seconds the stress suffered by a seriously ill patient. That experience has been multiplied in real and concrete efforts in the dissemination of patient safety. We will contribute to patient welfare in the same extent that we protect our patients of potential risks. The institutional agenda should focus on explaining the reasons to make mistakes, incidents related to the safety of patients, epidemiological studies and identification of risk and human factors, patient participation in her/his own safety, development of patient safety indicators, as well as evaluation of interventions to improve patient safety. Patient safety is everyone's responsibility.

Keywords : Patients; safety; medical assistance; error; adverse event.
