Abstract

NANNI, Antonio. Genres as sense effects: to a semiotics of culture. Tóp. Sem [online]. 2014, n.32, pp.59-92. ISSN 2594-0619.

Semiotics has not systematically examined the notion of "genre". After a literature review, I will outline three approaches to genres: the pragmatic approach, the linguistic approach, and the intertextual approach. The first two approaches are compatible with immanence as it is used in the parcours génératif. On the contrary, the last approach will turn out to be incompatible with that use of immanence. Consequently, I will develop the intertextual approach to genres within the semiotic theory of Umberto Eco. I will conclude by drawing the consequences of what I have argued: I will theorize pure immanence.

Keywords : genres; encyclopedia; intertextuality; diachrony; cultural formations.
