Abstract
BASABE-SERRANO, Santiago and CURVALE, Carolina. The Impact of the Judicial (In)Stability in the Economic Growing in Latin America: An Analysis in Historical Perspective. Polít. gob [online]. 2016, vol.23, n.2, pp.279-303. ISSN 1665-2037.
We argue that when it comes to assessing a country's economic performance, institutional stability is more important than specific institutional design features. Applying this general framework to the subfield of judicial politics, we contend that a) judicial stability is a determinant of economic growth, and b) this result is autonomous of judicial independence. After empirically evaluating the impact of judicial stability and judicial independence on the rate of economic growth in sixteen Latin American countries over the twentieth century, our findings show that there is sufficient evidence to support our hypotheses and to encourage further research on the differences between judicial stabi lity and judicial independence.
Keywords : institutional stability; judicial independence; economic performance; Latin America.
