Abstract

VARGAS GARDUNO, María de Lourdes; FERREYRA RODRIGUEZ, Oscar  and  MENDEZ PUGA, Ana María. Coaching P’urhepecha teachers of primary education in intercultural mediation. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.78, pp.33-53. ISSN 1665-2673.

Conflict is always present at the core of human relationships, as an implicit reality. However, the way of dealing with it can either promote or reduce violence. Indigenous communities experience similar situations. For this reason, a qualitative investigation was made using a research-action approach. The objective was to promote the non-violent confrontation of conflict in school through a mediation workshop with an intercultural approach, aimed at P’urhépecha teachers of an elementary school in the state of Michoacán, in Mexico. A change of attitude among teachers was achieved facing the conflict, as well as the development of some basic skills of intercultural mediation and the importance of group support. It is concluded that teachers need a tutorial accompaniment for implementing the mediation in the classrooms.

Keywords : Intercultural education; teacher training; school mediation; conflict; violence.
