Abstract

PEREZ ORTIZ, Alfonzo. Congregations in the Upper Mixtec. Sig. his [online]. 2017, vol.19, n.38, pp.56-87. ISSN 1665-4420.

This article analyzes the process of congregation of some Indian peoples in the Upper Mixtec (Oaxaca). It was a Spanish political instrument of settlement and colonization in America that was decisive for controlling the subjected peoples, their natural, economic and religious resources, and with which the pre-Hispanic structures of some of them were modified. Contrary to the case of central Mexico, little attention has been given to this change, and possibly adaptation, process experienced in the Upper Mixtec, a fact which prevents the understanding of the historical evolution of their peoples.

Keywords : Mixtecs; history; centuries 16th-17th; congregation; resistance.
