Abstract

LASKE, Trilce. An alternative to the clerical cursus honorum: Pedro de Avendaño and professional specialization (1695-1705). Sig. his [online]. 2018, vol.20, n.40, pp.144-177.  Epub Aug 03, 2020. ISSN 1665-4420.

For the secular sector of the XVII century, the traditional cursus honorum was within the ecclesial institutions (diocesan institutions, archbishopric courts, cathedral councils…) and it was based on an active professional polyvalence. Through the case of Pedro de Avendaño, this article attempts to show that churchmen were able to choose alternative professional paths in other areas, such as the City and the Court, which could even lead to consecration.

Keywords : intellectual history; New Spain; transatlantic history; patronage; clientelism.
