Abstract

GALLEGO RAMOS, José Raúl. The sociology of news production as an instrument for historical research based on media documentary sources. Sig. his [online]. 2018, vol.20, n.40, pp.312-334.  Epub Aug 03, 2020. ISSN 1665-4420.

This article discusses the opportunities that the sociology of news production offers to historians and other scholars who make use of media content as documentary sources. I highlight the interests and objects of study shared by both history and communication, as well as some problems faced by historians when dealing with such sources. I present the theory of a hierarchy of influences on media content as a conceptual alternative to resolve some of these difficulties. Furthermore, I put forward some strategies that facilitate the contextualization and critical analysis of media contents used as documentary sources.

Keywords : historical research; mass media; interdisciplinarity; journalism; methodology.
