Abstract

VIVALDO MARTINEZ, Juan Pablo. Old age in Porfirian medicine. Sig. his [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.42, pp.34-67.  Epub Aug 03, 2020. ISSN 1665-4420.

This paper examines different ideas about old age and aging that appeared in Europe during the nineteenth century and that circulated in different latitudes until they reach Mexico, where some doctors, medical students and hygienists, were concerned about this stage of life (old age) and its associated biological process (aging). This article highlights that the scientific study of old age and aging not only came from abroad, but was nourished by thoughts of Mexican specialists who shared their findings in magazines and hygiene manuals, which, despite not being available to all the society at the time, are considered as the first efforts to make the subject visible.

Keywords : aging; medical treatment; ideas; Porfiriato; hygienism.
