Abstract

This article analyzes the notions of distance and territorial extension in the processes of administration of the haciendas and the conformation of parishes in the archdiocese of Mexico during the second half of the 18th century. Based on documentary testimonies, it discusses the development of these concepts and how they were used in a variety of ways by the ecclesiastical authorities. The article poses the problem of the negotiation of space inside ecclesiastical jurisdictions and the establishment of territorial pacts between priests and landowners.
