Abstract

PARADA ULLOA, Marcos. Economic history of Chillán: between tradition and restricted modernization (1848-1890). Sig. his [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.43, pp.112-151.  Epub June 30, 2020. ISSN 1665-4420.

The objective of this article is to analyze the economic development of the province of Ñuble, whose case study is the city of Chillán. Focus on this city allows the evaluation of development and progress that the state authorities considered important to make the transition from a traditional economy to one trying to insert into a modernity that was restricted in practice, as the advances in the primary and tertiary sectors were superficial. The secondary activity would only be strengthened by the arrival of foreigners and would have relative importance at the end of the 19th century.

Keywords : province of Ñuble; economy; progress; foreigners; local history.
