Abstract

RAMIREZ CASAS, Ulises. Sierra Gorda in the mid-nineteenth century, 1840-1850. Sig. his [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.44, pp.216-259.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 1665-4420.

The objective of the present article is to offer a detailed panorama of the physical, political and human geography of the Sierra Gorda, addressing topics such as the political division and the population in the mid-nineteenth century. Although Sierra Gorda is a social space highly studied in Novohispanic historiography, there have been few works that offer a multidisciplinary analysis of the region during the 19th century. This text seeks to bring the reader closer to a time which has been understudied and which requires further analysis and understanding, in such a way that historiographical gaps can be filled and fragmentary readings of the Sierra, its marginality and that of its inhabitants can be corrected.

Keywords : serranos; roads; missions; majors; Xichú.
