Abstract

VILLEGAS TERAN, Karina. “An exception to a double title”. Women prisoners on the threshold of the twentieth century. Sig. his [online]. 2021, vol.23, n.46, pp.316-347.  Epub Oct 04, 2021. ISSN 1665-4420.

Throughout this article, we explore the prison life of women in nineteenth-century Mexico. We analyze the ideas about them, their experiences, some of their crimes and the way that authorities and people believed they could or could not regenerate. For that we study their workshops, festivities and jobs that were allowed to develop as a way of life in prison, which were closely related to nineteenth-century ideals of domesticity. This leads us to deepen ―throughout primary sources― the relationships that arose in the prison and how these became an important axis of life in prison.

Keywords : Porfiriato; gender; justice; jail; prison; prisoners.
