Abstract

GARCIA SOSA, Juan Carlos; MENESES NAVARRO, Sergio  and  PALE PEREZ, Sebastiana. Migración internacional indígena y vulnerabilidad ante el VIH-SIDA. Los chamulas entre barras y estrellas. LiminaR [online]. 2007, vol.5, n.1, pp.119-144. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v5i1.239.

This article presents testimonies of the experiences of indigenous people from Chamula in relation to the process of migration to the United States of America. The goal is to identify the conditions and the practices that place migrants and their families in danger of acquiring sexually transmitted infections, in particular HIV-AIDS. The guiding conceptual references are vulnerability and risk practices which serve to order the reflection surrounding the impact of migration on sexual health in Chamula. These concepts allow us to reflect in a general manner on the issue and to identify diverse analytical topics that then need to be elaborated upon. In this manner, the article presents a phenomenon that has not been well studied in the region and offers relevant information with which to enrich the discussion of migration and its effects on the local level.

Keywords : migratory process; risk behavior; vulnerability; sexually transmitted infections; HIV/AIDS.
