Abstract

MUNEVAR SALAZAR, Alejandro; CHAPARRO ROJAS, Laura Andrea  and  BERNAL CHAVEZ, Julio Alexander. When witches fly and cause damage. Cultural stereotypes about witchcraft among peasants in Colombia. LiminaR [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.1, e894.  Epub Sep 12, 2022. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v20i1.894.

Using a dialectological and ethnographic approach, this study describes and analyzes a number of cultural stereotypes held by the Colombian peasantry regarding witchcraft. Based on the Atlas lingüístico etnográfico de Colombia (1954-1983), this paper contrasts the linguistic materials of sound archives and linguistic maps. It makes use of the concept of ethnotexts to delve into the discursive logic of oral sources on popular culture and cultural stereotypes to discuss various peasant experiences and meanings of witchcraft in Colombia.

Keywords : cultural stereotypes; ethnotexts; peasantry; popular culture; witchcraft.
