Abstract

CANALES, Alejandro I.  and  MONTIEL ARMAS, Israel. Remesas e inversión productiva en comunidades de alta migración a Estados Unidos: El caso de Teocaltiche, Jalisco. Migr. Inter [online]. 2004, vol.2, n.3, pp.142-172. ISSN 2594-0279.

The effect of remittances on the socioeconomic conditions in Mexican communities that send migrants to the United States has been the object of a broad debate that has revived in recent years. The first part of this article analyzes the literature on the Mexican case from the 1970s to the present. It presents the structural and functionalist approaches that have analyzed the phenomenon and the economic character of remittances as a salary fund for migrants. The second part presents the results of a case study from Teocaltiche, Jalisco, which illustrates the role remittances play in the economic reproduction of households and in financing local productive activities.

Keywords : international migration; monetary remittances; productive investment; Mexico; United States.
