Abstract
HERNANDEZ VEGA, Leticia. ¿De aquí p'a allá o de allá p'a acá? Clubes de migrantes jaliscienses: promoción estratégica de capital social y desarrollo. Migr. Inter [online]. 2006, vol.3, n.4, pp.60-84. ISSN 2594-0279.
This article examines the connection between migration, social capital, and development. It analyzes two migrant organizations representing Jaliscans living in Los Angeles, California, and the members' respective communities of origin in Jalisco, Mexico: Jamay and Tecolotlán. The central argument is that social capital is produced differentially in both the town of origin and the U.S. destination. Consequently, development effects in the communities, derived from the receipt of collective remittances, also occurs unequally. This analysis of social capital in both contexts focuses on a schema of transnational convergence that comprises four possible scenarios for origin-destination concurrence. The article explores explanatory elements that promote the creation of social capital in both the place of origin and destination. Also presented are some of the effects that collective remittances have had on the communities of origin. This study contributes important information on the little-explored connection between migration and social capital.
