The text emphasizes that the role of ideas was determinant in the construction of the neoliberal agenda to influence the high circles of the politics, public administration and education. It had its greatest impulse, promotion and support in the business world, in particular of the financial sector; that finally turned out to be most benefited by imposing neoclassical economic theory as a role model. It shows that such a thought, in its neoliberal version, has prevailed in the implementation of the economic policy that has been followed since the beginning of the decade of 1980. This current did not consider the state as the single or main stage in the conduction of the economy, but it stimulated the central idea that the free market, without ties, was the best way to rediscover economic prosperity. The text shows that there are no unique recipes and a reflection call is made to cultivate in a plural form other ways of thinking and so design viable proposals to enrich the debate on the building of other economic policy options.
