Abstract

LEAL, Paulo  and  DABAT, Alejandro. The reconfiguration of the Mexico-United States relationship in the context of USMCA. Economía UNAM [online]. 2019, vol.16, n.48, pp.98-120.  Epub Dec 09, 2020. ISSN 1665-952X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fe.24488143e.2019.48.491.

This article is based on the idea that the economic relationship between Mexico and the United States has been built historically and in this sense, the productive structures of both nations have played a decisive role in their insertion mode. Productive complementarity between economies forms a symbiotic relationship in which both nations have favored the relationship, albeit unevenly. Therefore the continuation of the Trade Treaty is key for both nations because the wage differential of 8 to 1 is very attractive for US companies that manufacture from Mexico, and for Mexico also because it requires job creation, foreign direct investment and foreign currency inflow they produce US investments. The configuration of this relationship can be transformed from the economic emergency in the US manufacturing, the US neo-protectionism, the progress in productivity and competitiveness of the northern region of Mexico, the increasing participation of China in the world economy and the perspectives open for Mexico in its relationship with the US before the change of government.
