The political philosophy of María Zambrano is a critical one within the confines of Modernism. For her, the metamorphosis of the individual into a human being is the unbreakable human desire that forms part of a deep root that goes back to Saint Augustine and endures in modern times, acquiring new dimensions with liberalism and democracy. For Zambrano, liberalism is the political philosophy par excellence of Modernism. However, in light of the historical experience of class struggle in the 19^th Century, liberalism ceased to be, in the early part of the 20^th Century, the defining movement.
