Abstract

ALGRANTI, Joaquín. Rituals of consumption: Uses and scope of religious goods in the sanctuary of St. Expedito. Andamios [online]. 2016, vol.13, n.32, pp.331-356. ISSN 2594-1917.

The aim of this article is to explore the rituals of consumption around the image of San Expedito in the parish Nuestra Señora de Balvanera in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The article is divided into three parts. In the first one, our proposed is to briefly reconstruct the figure of homo oeconomicus and its influence in studies of religious consumption. In the second section we will explore the ritual uses of religious goods. Finally, we are going to analyze how religious goods express competing spiritualities among priest and pilgrims. The research includes in-depth interviews, participant observations in the parish and -to a lesser extent- the analysis of documents.
