Abstract

FREIDENBERG, Flavia. The Other Representation: Local Clientele Links in Mexico. Andamios [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.34, pp.231-258. ISSN 2594-1917.

This research presents evidence that political relations are not only programmatic links but also entail clientelistic ties. Those represent an additional form of representation held because of the marginality conditions of the population, the high profitability of clientelist exchange and the perception of mutual benefits that actors receive as a product of that exchange. The study reports how politicians relate to local brokers and customers in Mexico while seeking to maximize their electoral choices and gives voice to intermediaries as a crucial point of the intermediation.

Keywords : Clientelism; Mexico; Partido Revolucionario Institucional; local politics.
