Abstract

GOMEZ ESCARDA, María; HORMIGOS RUIZ, Jaime  and  PERELLO OLIVER, Salvador. The cycle of violence against women in popular music songs in Spain. Andamios [online]. 2019, vol.16, n.41, pp.331-353.  Epub May 20, 2020. ISSN 2594-1917.  https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v16i41.728.

Popular music offers an exceptional opportunity to connect with reality and reflect on its problems. The objective of this work is to study how gender violence is treated in songs in Spain, relating musical styles with the description of the cycle of violence. We use a quantitative methodology based on the content analysis of a sample of 210 songs with this theme accumulated over the last four decades. The results show that as society internalizes the seriousness of the problem, gender violence becomes a constant in the discourse of popular music.

Keywords : Cycle of violence; songs; popular music; ethics values; empowerment.
