Abstract

OCHMAN, Marta. On modernity and postmodernity: a reflection on the future of democracy. Andamios [online]. 2021, vol.18, n.46, pp.95-115.  Epub Jan 17, 2022. ISSN 2594-1917.  https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v18i46.839.

The article proposes the need for a radical change in the model of representative democracy to fit the characteristics and challenges of postmodern society. It analyzes the crisis of democracy from the perspective of the theory of modernity and postmodernity, integrating risk theory. As a possible alternative, the liquid democracy and slow democracy is proposed. In contrast to defensive approaches, which explore ways to protect democratic institutions against the threat of populism, this article raises the need to look to the future and to adapt democratic institutions to the demands and preferences of the new generations, socialized in postmodernity.

Keywords : Liquid democracy; slow democracy; postmodernity; risk society; populism.
