Abstract

MORENO BARRENECHE, Sebastián. Future as a textual construction: the contribution of semiotics to the study of temporal discursivity. Andamios [online]. 2023, vol.20, n.51, pp.35-54.  Epub Sep 29, 2023. ISSN 2594-1917.  https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v20i51.967.

This article aims to contribute to the study of temporal segmentation - in particular, of the future - through a presentation of Semiotics’ contributions. For Semiotics, the segmentation of time into categories such as “past”, “present” and “future” is the result of a process of segmentation and discursive construction characterised by its relational and eventive nature - it is a process based on establishing oppositions and differences between events that serve to give linearity to human experience. Therefore, while the present is an actual time, the past and the future are characterised by their absence and are only accessible through texts. The article presents a general conception of the future from a semiotic perspective as a textual construction and illustrates the theoretical argument with concrete examples.

Keywords : Future; semiotics; constructivism; climate change; dystopian fiction.
