Abstract

TELLEZ-LOPEZ, Miguel A. et al. Evaluation of the effect of methanol extract of Tagetes lucida on testicular function and sperm quality in male Wistar rats. Rev. mex. cienc. farm [online]. 2013, vol.44, n.4, pp.43-52. ISSN 1870-0195.

Sperm and testicular quality were determined in male Wistar rats administered with methanol extract of Tagetes lucida. The rats were divided into negative and positive control group and treated group. We determined the toxicity of the extract with Artemia salina showing an LD50 of 454.03 µg/mL. Testes and epididymis weight and testosterone levels showed no significant difference. The sperm variables treated group decreased significantly, testicular morphology in histological sections showed vacuolation of the seminiferous tubules. The genotoxicity found by comet assay on sperm showed single-stranded breaks in DNA in different migration levels of UA 170.8. It is concluded that the methanolic extract of Tagetes lucida reduces sperm quality and affects the male rat testicular structure.
