Abstract

IGLESIAS LINARES, Mildred; GONZALEZ GALBAN, Humberto  and  MENA MARTINEZ, Mercedes. Sociocultural and demographic characterization of trans people in Cuba. Discriminatory attitudes towards them. Culturales [online]. 2017, vol.5, n.1, pp.189-216. ISSN 2448-539X.

The objectives of this article are to identify sociocultural and demographic characteristics of the trans people in Cuba, and to know the attitudes of Cubans towards these people. As part of the methodological design of the work was included a set of questions that made it possible to have the information to achieve a reasoned approach to the proposed objectives. At the national level, the study is valuable because, for the first time, the trans population can be treated in a differentiated way according to their particularities. Nevertheless, there are no precedents in this respect that allow to know the evolution of the associated characteristics and problems. Results show that the number of trans surpasses three thousand people, whose sociocultural characteristics point to them as a poorly favored group and that the discriminatory attitudes they suffer differ according to the demographic attributes of the population that exerts them.

Keywords : transsexuals; social characterization; discriminatory attitudes; Cuba.
