Abstract

A study involving several Clavariadelphus species present in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (FVTM, for short from Spanish: Faja Volcánica Transmexicana) was carried out to recognize patterns in richness and endemism. The study area was divided into a 0.5° × 0.5° latitude/longitude grid where 240 records from 14 national collections, specialized literature and institutional database were located. The data obtained show that the species richness present are heterogeneously distributed, where the highest number of species and records are concentrate at the central and eastern portions of the FVTM. The Complementarity Index (IC) for each combination of grid-cells resulted in relatively high values. Within the FVTM, 5 grid-cells are enough to represent the complete range of species from the genus Clavariadelphus in central Mexico. The grid-cell with the highest species richness and value of endemism coincides with the Natural Protected Area known as the Corredor Biológico Chichinautzin-Tepozteco, Morelos-Ciudad de México-Estado de México. It is concluded that the FVTM is a biodiverse zone of species of Clavariadelphus within which 68.4% of the total species known to the world are concentrated.
