Abstract

We present information on the richness and abundance of species of sphingid and saturniids collected in La Fortuna Forest Reserve (RFF) and La Amistad International Park (PILA) in the province of Chiriquí, Panama. We sampled monthly in both sites from October 2011 to October 2013, with light traps for its capture from 18:00 to 22:00 h. The samplings were evaluated by means of species accumulation curves and nonparametric wealth estimators. A total of 92 species of Sphingidae and Saturniidae were identified, with 11 new reports for the moth fauna of Panama. For RFF, 42 species of Sphingidae and 22 species of Saturniidae are recorded. In the PILA, 14 species of Sphingidae and 11 species of Saturniidae are documented. The richness and abundance of Saturniidae species were correlated with the precipitation and abundance of Sphingidae with relative humidity. This study evidences the first records of the species of Sphingidae and Saturniidae for the RFF and PILA. Also, the results indicate the good state of conservation in which the RFF is maintained in comparison with the PILA, which has received an impact due to the agricultural activities.
