Abstract

MOCTEZUMA, Víctor  and  HALFFTER, Gonzalo. A new species from Mexico and a new record from Guatemala of the Onthophagus dicranius species complex (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Rev. Mex. Biodiv. [online]. 2019, vol.90, e903015.  Epub Dec 30, 2019. ISSN 2007-8706.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ib.20078706e.2019.90.3015.

We describe herein Onthophagus chinantecus sp. nov. from Oaxaca, Mexico. The new species belongs to the O. dicranius species complex. The genital morphology of females of O. asperodorsatus and O. petenensis is illustrated and compared for the very first time. The external and genital morphology of the female confirms the need of recognizing O. chinantecus as a new species and demonstrates its utility to identify closely related species. The first occurrence record of O. petenensis from Guatemala is presented and the distribution of the O. dicranius species group in Mexico is commented.

Keywords : Oaxaca; Los Chimalapas; Onthophagini; Dung beetles.
