Abstract

FERRU, Marcos  and  RUIZ DE GAMBOA, Margarita. New genus and new species of Physogasterini (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) from northern Chile, with a key to the genera of the tribe. Rev. Mex. Biodiv. [online]. 2021, vol.92, e923724.  Epub Feb 03, 2022. ISSN 2007-8706.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ib.20078706e.2021.92.3724.

A new genus and a new species of Tenebrionidae (Coleoptera) are described for the Atacama Region, Chile. This new genus belongs to the tribe Physogasterini and is morphologically similar to Philorea and Physogaster, but males have a circular bulge as a sexual character, that allow us to differentiate it from the other genera. Until now, the only known species is that described herein, which is endangered due to its restricted distribution and low population densities. A new identification key is provided for the known genera of Physogasterini.

Keywords : Diversity; Taxonomy; Atacama Desert; Conservation.
