Abstract
IBARRA GONZALEZ, José Israel and VARGAS-VALLE, Eunice D.. Family Reconfiguration among Migrants Deported along Mexico’s Northern Border. Norteamérica [online]. 2021, vol.16, n.1, pp.121-145. Epub Oct 25, 2021. ISSN 2448-7228. https://doi.org/10.22201/cisan.24487228e.2021.1.434.
Toughening U.S. anti-immigrant policy has led to the expulsion of millions of migrants over the last twenty years, with consequences for their families. This article analyzes the reconfiguration of deported migrants’ families along Mexico’s northern border. The study’s mixed methodology analyzes the 2014 National Demographic Dynamics Survey and thirty-one semi-structured interviews with deportees in Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez. The quantitative findings indicate that among deportees, the percentage of non-family homes is greater and that of nuclear-family homes, smaller, than among returnees and non-migrants. Based on the interviews, the authors present a typology of the most common family arrangements among deported migrants, allowing us to understand the effect of immigration policy on family separation across borders.
