Return migration to Mexico has changed in important ways in the twenty-first century. After an increase in the century’s first decade, the return population has now decreased. In addition, children and youths have emerged as an increasingly important sub-group among returnees. This article discusses critically 1) the research projects that document the characteristics, needs, and experience of returning children and youths’ reintegration, and 2) the policies and actions designed by the federal government to deal with this population’s needs. The author seeks to contribute to the discussion about returnee children and youths of Mexican origin, setting out priority areas about which we still have important questions to ask in research. In addition, she points out the gaps in public policy in favor of returnee children and youths that most urgently need to be filled.
