In this article, I analyze the projection and future perspective of the BRICS (and IBSA) as a South-South cooperation group. To this end, I seek to identify their convergences and structural conflicts, attending to both domestic and systemic factors. Special emphasis will be placed on the impact of the nature of political systems. The main structural challenges and weaknesses of the BRICS, which are identified and analyzed in the article, are: political systems of different nature; difference of weight or influence in the international board; internal rivalries; growing difficulty in using the category of South-South cooperation as a legitimating discursive mechanism; commercial divergences; dissonance in environmental matters; and, finally, dissimilar nuclear status.
