Abstract

SANDOVAL GODOY, Sergio A.  and  WONG-GONZALEZ, Pablo. Especialización regional, integración de proveedores e impactos locales: El nuevo proyecto de expansión de Ford-Hermosillo. Región y sociedad [online]. 2005, vol.17, n.33, pp.3-32. ISSN 2448-4849.

This article offers an explanation about the strategic reasons of Ford Motor Company's management to launch a new productive expansion project in Hermosillo, Sonora, in the North of Mexico, for 2005. Among other purposes, this paper is aimed to demonstrate that in addition to factors related to local comparative and competitive advantages already consolidated, the instrumentation of a new supplier model constitutes the most important strategic component that defines the regional specialization and the productive expansion programs of the corporation at present. This strategic component is associated with the consolidation of the company's learning and organizational development model in the autoparts sector, which implicates, among other aspects, the mutual interchange of information, social relations based on command and trust as well as direct technical cooperation with suppliers. Finally, in order to take full advantage of this new phase in the region, the authors emphasize the need of an endogenous strengthening of the project, adopting a medium and long term proactive vision.

Keywords : supplier model; organizational learning; consolidation centers; system-firm configuration; endogenous development.
