Abstract

PELCASTRE-VILLAFUERTE, Blanca; KENDALL, Tamil  and  MAGIS, Carlos. Las maquiladoras frente al VIH/sida, implementación de programas y percepción de los empleadores en Puebla. Región y sociedad [online]. 2008, vol.20, n.43, pp.189-211. ISSN 2448-4849.

Social vulnerability, human rights violations, some stigmas and discrimination prevail in the maquiladora industry. The present research was carried out in Puebla, because of the development of the maquiladora industry there, as well as the high rate of AIDS cases among women. It also sought to document the existence of programs which respond to the HIV epidemic in the workplace. Methods included a questionnaire completed by employers and semi-structured interviews with health professionals, activists of non-government organizations (NGO) , and academics; non-participant observation was also carried out. Prevalent labor conditions, particularly in clandestine maquiladoras that work as sub-contractors, and the failure to comply with federal labor legislation, contribute to raise female workers' vulnerability to HIV and AIDS. The study documented a lack of HIV/AIDS prevention programs in the workplace, as well as stigmatizing attitudes and discrimination among employers.

Keywords : maquiladora industry; hiv/aids; vulnerability; workplace; Mexico.
