Abstract

Región y sociedad [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.47, pp.09-29. ISSN 2448-4849.

The establishment of blue fin tuna fattening farms off the coast of Baja California changed the fate of sardine production. In the past it was either frozen or industrialized as fishmeal, but now it is used as blue fin tuna food. This generated a positive social and economic impact for the sardine boat owners and fishermen, since the influx of substantial investments for the development of tuna fattening enterprises increased sardine prices, making its fishery profitable.

Keywords : fattening; sardine; prices; bluefin tuna; production.
