Abstract

BENEZ, Mara Cristina; KAUFFER MICHEL, Edith F.; SOARES MORAES, Denise  and  ALVAREZ GORDILLO, Guadalupe. El estudio de las percepciones de la gestión de la calidad del agua, una herramienta para fortalecer la participación pública en la microcuenca del río Fogótico, Chiapas. Región y sociedad [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.47, pp.73-104. ISSN 2448-4849.

This article explores the perceptions of different social groups—i.e., "political," "institutional," and "water user"—on current and expected water quality management in the Fogótico River microbasin in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. The results of the research, carried out using qualitative tools, showed differences in perception between social groups and helped identify their relationship to the deficient or disjointed actions of water authorities, the legal framework, community organization and gender issues that influence perceptions. We conclude with a reflection on the potential contribution of environmental perception studies for river basin management and public participation.

Keywords : environmental perception; water management; river basin; public participation; Fogótico River microbasin.
