Abstract

VARELA LLAMAS, Rogelio; OCEGUEDA HERNANDEZ, Juan Manuel; CASTILLO PONCE, Ramón A.  and  HUBER BERNAL, Gerardo. Determinantes de los ingresos salariales en México: una perspectiva de capital humano. Región y sociedad [online]. 2010, vol.22, n.49, pp.117-142. ISSN 2448-4849.

This article estimates a wage equation for Mexico within a human capital theory framework. The source of the data is the Encuesta nacional de ingreso y gasto de los hogares 2006 [2006 National Survey of Household Income and Expenses], produced by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía [National Institute of Statistics and Geography]. We evaluate the impact of schooling and job experience on the income level of the head of household, controlling for attributes such as type of labor contract, gender, population stratus, unionization and territory. Applying the two-step procedure suggested by Heckman, we find that wage disparities by schooling are significant. In addition, the results suggest that rate of marginal return is consistent with percentage increase in wages for each level of formal education. Finally, those heads of household that belong to a union and have a temporary or permanent labor contract receive greater earnings that those who do not.

Keywords : wage differentials; human capital; educational level; income; labor market.
