Abstract

NUNEZ NORIEGA, Guillermo. Masculinity, rurality and regional hegemonies: reflections from northern Mexico. Región y sociedad [online]. 2017, vol.29, n.spe5, pp.75-113. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys.2017.0.a301.

We present the results of qualitative research aimed at knowing the presence of gender ideologies in the process of state formation (in particular, regionalist discourses) in Sonora. The methodology involved discourse analysis of various cultural products and in-depth interviews. We conclude that gender ideologies and regionalist discourses are intertwined and that both take part in the process of hegemony. Rural images, with a regionalist and masculine content, play an important role, increasingly disputed, in this process.

Keywords : masculinity; gender ideologies; political culture; regionalist discourses; cultural products; rurality.
