Abstract

HUERTA MATA, Rosa María. Leer, Violence against University Female Students. Región y sociedad [online]. 2020, vol.32, e1285.  Epub Jan 27, 2021. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2020/32/1285.

This article analyses female and male university students’ social representation of sexual harassment due to male professors’ leering to female students. Four focus groups, formed by students from Law and Psychology programs from Escuela Superior de Actopan, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, were studied. Twenty-eight females and twenty males integrate the population sample. Focus groups methodology does not allow obtaining detailed information from each participant. Both gender students express their indignation and rejection towards this kind of sexual harassment; nevertheless, they do not express the situation in terms of human rights. Investigation’s results may provide elements for the development of the University protocol against gender violence. Evidence shows the need to bond accurately the legal definition for leer and the related terms used in college protocols.

Keywords : leer; mandate of masculinity; teachers; university students.
