Abstract

CORRALES C., Salvador. Industrial Use of Water in the Heineken Brewery in Monterrey, Mexico. Región y sociedad [online]. 2020, vol.32, e1298.  Epub Jan 27, 2021. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2020/32/1298.

The objective of this article is to analyze beer industrialization in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. This city suffers from scarcity of water, the main raw material for the beverage manufacture. The theory of industrial organization is summarized, and production and marketing are analyzed to identify Heineken’s position in the national beer market. Statistics for water concessions allowed the construction of various industrial activities concentration indices. The comparison of those indices with the gross industrial value added resulted in the identification for the contributions to regional economic development. Notable among the main findings is the beer industry low contribution to regional GDP, compared to steel industry, whose water consumption exceeds the regional and national average for this industrial activity. This fact could lead to conflicts over water administration.

Keywords : Water; beer; concentration; competition; oligopoly.
