Objective: to examine the relationship between leader behavior and organizational effectiveness among academic coordinators in one higher education institution in Northwestern Mexico. Methodology: the study is described as quantitative and has a correlational scope with a 82 faculty members sample, who answered the multifactor leadership questionnaire to assess the competencies of 12 Program coordinators. Results: the adoption of a transactional and transformational style partially associates with the perception held by faculty members regarding academic coordinators’ organizational effectiveness. Passive leadership negatively correlates with the perception of organizational effectiveness. Value: the use of one organizational leadership model in an educational context in Mexico. Limitations: the focus on one single educational institution. Conclusions: it is possible to develop specific leadership behavior in academic coordinators to increase organizational effectiveness.
