Abstract

GARCIA-ALCARAZ, Janet Gabriela  and  FLORES-PALACIOS, María de Fátima. From Intimacy to Citizenship: Sexual Socialization of Young People in León, Guanajuato. Región y sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.34, e1605.  Epub June 01, 2023. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2022/34/1605.

Objective: to analyze the impact of sexual socialization in young people of León, Guanajuato, in the intimate citizenship exercise and construction through gender and youth. Methodology: 10 women and 10 men between 18 and 24 years old were interviewed. The information was systematized by thematic coding. Results: the reproduction of hegemonic conceptions trough socialization is expressed materially, symbolically and intersubjectively by the unawareness of one’s own body, the inaccessibility to health services, the little or no comprehensive sex education, the violence, and the difficulties experiencing pleasure. These situations set women at a greater vulnerability. Value: the feminist perspective is used to approach the exercise of intimate citizenship. Conclusions: intimate citizenship problematizes the limits between the public and private realm and places sexualities within a rights framework to achieve equality and mitigate vulnerability among young people.

Keywords : sexual and reproductive rights; gender; youth; intimate citizenship; León, Guanajuato.
