Abstract

MARTINEZ CURIEL, Enrique. The children of mexican immigrants in the United States and their educational aspirations: a new theorical proposal. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2013, vol.8, n.15, pp.8-49. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2013.15.85.

This work is a theoretical proposal thatuses a family life perspective to explore the construction of educational aspirations of Mexican immigrant children. Ittakes into consideration different theoretical approaches. The article begins by stating that «the family is a strategic element to understand the dynamics of both legal and illegal immigration flowsand the immigrant’s adaptation process» (Rumbaut,1997: 4). The analytical proposal sets forth that the object of study must be approached at the level of the innerdynamics within family life. It is also important to take into account the social and cultural context of the place where family immigration originates,as well as the context of the receiving location.

Keywords : educational aspirations; immigrant children; family life; theoretical approach.
