This article analyzes the social and economic transformations that took place in the region of Tonalá, Chiapas during the twentieth century associated with the presence of the railway. It reviews the significance of this means of land transportation, the impact of which on the Tonalá region kept decreasing throughout the twentieth century due to changes in various aspects of social, political and economic life in Chiapas State.
