Abstract

CANO CONTRERAS, Eréndira Juanita; PAGE PLIEGO, Jaime T.  and  ESTRADA LUGO, Erin I. J.. The construction of the notion of Mayan Worldview in Guatemala. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2018, vol.13, e336. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2018.v13.336.

In this work we seek to contribute to the knowledge and process of historical, political, and cultural configuration of the Pan-Mayan notion of «Mayan Worldview», which has been proposed, spread and practiced by both intellectuals and activists from Mayan communities in Guatemala. We propose that this is an example of the adoption, appropriation and reinterpretation of an academic term in the context of local community and politics. We review the context in which the Pan-Mayan notion arises; from it, the Mayan Worldview is said to be the unifying concept for the processes of strengthening, visibility, vindication, and revitalization of the Mayan culture in Guatemala in the years following the internal armed conflict.

Keywords : Pan-Mayism; decolonization; political vindication; Mayan identity.
