Abstract

RAMIREZ CASAS, Ulises. The Margins of Colonial Order: the Serragordana Geography from the Annotations of Civilian, Religious and Military Authority (1780-1819). Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2020, vol.15, e437.  Epub Mar 05, 2021. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2020.v15.437.

In this manuscript the discourse of civilian, religious and military authorities who made descriptions about the geography of Sierra Gorda and its inhabitants, between 1780 and 1819, are studied. On one hand an analysis is made, through discourse, of the process by which the uniform image of Sierra Gorda was formed. That is one of a wild, infertile and inaccessible land which was gradually associated with the ways of life and the temperament of the inhabitants of the mountains. On the other hand, we expose an analytical approach of the relationship between the discourses of New Spain’s authorities and the campaigns for territory planning and control. Finally, it is shown that through these campaigns, the margins of Sierra Gorda were transformed during the first two decades of the XIX century.

Keywords : Sierra Gorda; frontier territory; territorial control; population re-ordering; war.
