Abstract

BENAVIDES BARQUERO, Manuel. Projects Favoring the Provinces of the Kingdom of Guatemala at the Courts of Cádiz. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2020, vol.15, e484.  Epub Mar 05, 2021. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2020.v15.484.

This paper aims to analyze the projects sent to the Courts of Cádiz by the provinces of the Kingdom of Guatemala. It intends to discern the nuances of the theory about the search for autonomy from Spain used to interpret the actions regarding the projects carried out by representatives from the American colonies at those Courts. Since this is a theme that has hardly been researched, most data comes from archival sources treated thematically by means of a database. The findings have enabled a clearer understanding that the driving force behind these projects was not the search for autonomy from Spain, but rather an economically-driven struggle to gain power internally. The findings have also helped to answer why despite the fact that emancipation took place without bloodshed, the provinces split apart leading to the failure of the federal system.

Keywords : Projects; progress; division; autonomy; independence.
